Aakash Tablet Misses Another Deadline

The dream project of India – Aakash tablet- that received as much buzz as flak, has yet again missed its deadline. The cheapest tablet, Aakash 2 was slated to release in the end of May but the deadline swooshed by yet again, even as students across countries wait for the device.
Aakash, Aakash tablet, HCL Infosystems, IIT Rajasthan, delay

In the month of March, communications minister, Kapil Sibal had promised that the tablets will be ready to launch by the last week of May. The tablets that are priced at Rs 2,276, were much-publicised as an aid to the education segment. Moreover, it was even discussed at length in Lok Sabha that the tablet will be launched with stronger battery life and better processing power. But all the promises seem to be falling flat.
While there was no response on the delay of the device from the government, sources close to the matter has confirmed that the tablet is being tested at the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.
Throwing light on the history of the project, the tablet was first talked about in the year 2010. HCL Infosystems was the first company contacted for the manufacturing of the devices, but the company reportedly backed out and then entered Canada-based DataWind for the $35-tablet project. IIT Rajasthan was given the responsibility of checking the quality standards of the device.
The company has since received wide public backlash but things have not improved much. Let's wait and watch!
