The year 2011 seemed promising for Google as its Chrome Web browser was the only browser that could not be hacked by anyone at the popular Pwn2own competition. Chrome is perceived to be far secure than Firefox and Internet Explorer because the platform uses ‘sandboxing’. But the dynamics have changed this year. A team of French hackers from Vupen were able to break into Chrome within ‘a record’ less than five minutes.
The research head even told The Telegraph: “We wanted to show that Chrome was not unbreakable. Last year, we saw a lot of headlines that no one could hack Chrome. We wanted to make sure it was the first to fall this year.” In fact the team had been working on the browser six weeks prior to the competition. The hacker group even said that they will keep the hacking details of the Google’s sandbox technology under wraps, for the sake of customers.
