Till some time back, Linux world was abuzz with news about Ubuntu Linux 12.04 Precise Pangolin with Long Term Support, making it a secure option for both enterprises and personal users. However, the work does not stop rolling in the Linux world. Canonical yesterday unveiled the first alpha version of Ubuntu Linux 12.04 successor- Ubuntu Linux 12.10 ‘Quantal Quetzel’ Alpha 1.
The free and open source distribution is free to download from the Ubuntu site. Here are seven broad reasons why you must give it a try:
Linux Kernel 3.4
Linus Torvalds released version 3.4 of the Linux Kernel just last month and it has been added to Ubuntu 12.10. It comes with driver support for several new graphics cards along with new security module and key updates to the Btrfs file system.
Sole 800MB image
The CD and DVD Ubuntu desktop images are compact images consolidated in a single 800MB usage on either USB or DVD, says the technical review of the Alpha 1 software.
Improved look of Update Manager
While not much information is available on this, but it is expected that Ubuntu Linux 12.10 will have a new look for the Update Manager. The developers stated: “More to come in future.”
Updates for GNOME
GNOME has come with various updates in Quantal Quitzel, with more to come, according to developers.
Firefox with Thunderbird
The Alpha 1 comes with the latest Firefox and Thunderbird
Migration Assistant Omitted
Since many issues were reported in the Migration Assistant earlier, the installer in Ubuntu 12.10 now does not offer the migration assistant. "The installer team felt that it was not worth the resources to bring it up to a level of quality sufficient to continue including it," the developers said.
Python 3
Ubuntu 12.10's desktop image will come only with Python 3, ruling out Python 2. The developers said: "Alpha-1 begins this process, with the installer and some other applications ported to Python 3. There are still quite a few packages left to port, and so Python 2 and 3 are both installed for the time being."
