Microsoft And Google To Work Together On New YouTube Windows Phone App

Sunday, May 26, 2013:  Google and Microsoft will be working together on a new YouTube application for Windows Phone. Google will be announcing about this association today!
It seems both of them have settled some of their differences after fighting a battle over Mircosoft’s unauthorized YouTube app. Google had asked Microsoft to remove its app by 22 May, but Microsoft released an update and said that it has addressed some of Google's concerns earlier this week.

Google says, "Microsoft and YouTube are working together to update the new YouTube for Windows Phone app to enable compliance with YouTube’s API terms of service, including enabling ads, in the coming weeks."
Microsoft, on the other hand, seems happy to integrate ads in its app if Google grants it access to an official API. This means, Microsoft is required to use publicly available YouTube APIs such as JavaScript and IFrame etc, which means its upcoming full application is likely to lose functionality. Though these APIs were also available earlier, but Microsoft kept complaining that Google never allowed Microsoft to offer a fully featured YouTube app for Windows Phone.
It seems Microsoft has deliberately released its own full YouTube Windows Phone application rather than choosing to provide a simple link to a mobile site. Probably, this was done to push the matter into the public domain and put pressure on Google so that it allows complete access to its API or face the risk of sounding irrational. But, it seems the circumstances have not changed much as Google has only provided a limited API to allow Microsoft to build its new app.
As per a Google spokesperson, “Microsoft will now work with Google on the new app, and will "replace the existing YouTube app in Windows Phone Store with the previous version during this time."

Microsoft Advances the Cloud OS With New Management Solutions

Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of new solutions to help enterprise customers manage hybrid cloud services and connected devices with greater agility and cost-efficiency. System Center 2012 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the enhanced Windows Intune, Windows Azure services for Windows Server and other new offerings deliver against the Microsoft Cloud OS vision to provide customers and partners with the platform to address their top IT challenges.

“With Windows Server and Windows Azure at its core, the Cloud OS provides a consistent platform across customer datacenters, service provider datacenters and the Microsoft public cloud,” said Michael Park, corporate vice president of marketing for Server and Tools, Microsoft. “Powerful management and automation capabilities are key elements of the Cloud OS, taking the heavy lifting out of administration and freeing IT organizations to be more innovative as they embrace hybrid cloud computing and the consumerization of IT.”

Nokia Drive+ Beta now available for Windows Phone 8 devices

 

Microsoft announced on Wednesday that the Nokia Drive+ Beta turn-by-turn navigation app is now available for all Windows Phone 8 smartphones in the US, UK, and Canada. Previously, the Nokia Drive+ app was only available for Nokia smartphones, and other Windows Phone smartphones had to make do with Microsoft's Bing Maps app for navigation purposes, which lacks features like voice-guided directions.

The Drive+ app features full, voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation, offline maps, speed limit warnings, and different modes for day and night usage. Microsoft say that the app is still in beta while it's being fine tuned, but Windows Phone users can download it for free directly from the Windows Phone Store right now.

One of our biggest complaints with the HTC Windows Phone 8X and other non-Nokia Windows Phone smartphones was the lack of free voice-guided directions and general lousiness of the native Windows Phone 8 maps app, and it's good to see that Microsoft has addressed this. Nokia promised back in June of last year that it would make the Drive app available to all of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 partners, but today is the first time that HTC, Samsung, and other Windows Phone devices have had access to it. Nokia and Microsoft's close relationship has already resulted in Nokia providing the mapping data used by the Bing Maps app, and now Microsoft owes one more item to Nokia. Of course, with Nokia putting its full weight and trust behind Windows Phone 8 for its smartphone line, it owes Microsoft just as much.

HelpBridge, a free new mobile app from Microsoft, aims to support those primary needs. Available today in the U.S. for Windows Phone, Android, and iOS, HelpBridge is designed to make it easy to connect with friends and family during a large-scale disaster such as an earthquake or a hurricane. It also enables users to give time, money and resources to support relief and rebuilding efforts.

When disasters occur, the first thing people who were impacted want to do is to reach friends and family, said James Rooney, program manager for Microsoft Citizenship’s Technology for Good program, which developed the app. HelpBridge lets users build a list of friends and family they would want to contact in an emergency. With a few swipes, they can let all those contacts know via SMS, email or Facebook if they’re OK or if they need help. The alert can also give a user’s exact location via their phone’s GPS capabilities.

HelpBridge also provides three easy ways to support relief and recovery efforts in the wake of a disaster, Rooney said. People can use the app to donate funds quickly to a broad range of relief agencies including the American Red Cross, CARE and Global Giving. They can also find out what goods and resources relief agencies on the ground need — making sure they send items such as tents, gloves, and pet food to the right places. Finally, HelpBridge lists real-time volunteering opportunities posted by relief agencies, enabling users to directly or indirectly support relief efforts with their time.

HelpBridge grew out of Microsoft’s longstanding commitment to disaster response, Surma said. His global team leverages the company’s technology to help relief agencies, nonprofits, and governments respond when a natural disaster occurs. Microsoft has gained valuable knowledge and insight into these crises through its work, he said.

 

 

 

“When disaster strikes, you don’t want to be fumbling with your phone and trying to find your mom’s number,” said Tony Surma, chief technology officer for Microsoft’s Disaster Response team.

During recent natural disasters such as the ones that struck Haiti and Japan, Microsoft’s global response team saw technology spin up to help people connect with friends, family and relief efforts, Rooney said. But those technologies tended to be built quickly, were specific to the disaster region, and became obsolete in the weeks and months after a disaster.

Rather than recreate technology after each disaster, why not build something “disaster-agnostic” and have it in place no matter where or when disaster strikes? That was the initial spark behind HelpBridge.

The team focused first on helping people connect with loved ones through their smartphones, which have become key communication tools when disaster strikes, said Gisli Olaffson, Emergency Response Director for NetHope. “The simpler we can make it for people to let others know if they are fine or if they need assistance, the more likely they are of being able to get that information out,” he said. “Microsoft’s HelpBridge mobile app is a great addition to the tools people have for reporting their needs and their status following any natural disaster.”

Microsoft also worked with a range of relief agencies and nonprofits as it developed HelpBridge. Rather than reinvent the wheel, it talked to partners such as the Mobile Giving Foundation, VolunteerMatch, Aidmatrix and Network for Good to help users make an impact, Surma said. “We really wanted to provide a breadth of opportunities to match the breadth of generosity people provide after a disaster.”

Tying everything together on the back end is Microsoft Windows Azure, an open and flexible cloud platform that makes all the different services easy to use and incredibly reliable, he said.

Surma encouraged consumers to download HelpBridge and take a few minutes to set it up.

“When disaster strikes, you don’t want to be fumbling with your phone and trying to find your mom’s number,” he said. “Spending a little time now can pay off in spades.”

Likewise, Rooney hopes the app can help facilitate giving when disasters strikes. He pointed to the millions of people who have responded in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which will likely be the most expensive disaster in U.S. history. HelpBridge could have helped donors find new ways to give.

“People have been extremely generous donating their time and money after Sandy,” he said. “HelpBridge could be a simple way to bump up donations or help people find new volunteer opportunities. If we can direct consumers to give easily, that’s really what it’s all about.”

Microsoft Reports Record Revenue of $21.5 Billion in Second Quarter

Microsoft Corp. today announced quarterly revenue of $21.46 billion for the quarter ended December 31, 2012. Operating income, net income, and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $7.77 billion, $6.38 billion, and $0.76 per share.

These financial results reflect the net deferral of revenue for the Windows Upgrade Offer, Office Upgrade Offer and Pre-sales, and the Entertainment and Devices Division Video Game Deferral, partially offset by the recognition of previously deferred revenue for Windows 8 Pre-sales. The following table reconciles these financial results reported in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to non-GAAP financial results. We have provided this non-GAAP financial information to aid investors in better understanding the company’s performance.

SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension Gets SAP NetWeaver Integration

SUSE today announced,that its SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability Extension 11 Service Pack 2 is certified for integration with the SAP NetWeaver technology platform. Windows Phone 7.8 Roll Out Gets Delayed

For all the Lumia handset owners in the country waiting for the moment when their Windows Phone (WP)7.5 will receive its WP 7.8 upgrade, well, the wait is set to continue with reports confirming that the plans to roll WP 7.8 has been delayed.
As per the report, the over the air (OTA) update for WP 7.8 will not be rolled out immediately, instead, the manufacturers will focus on launching devices running on the WP 7.8 platform before issuing updates to existing devices.

None of the existing WP 7 devices, including the Nokia 900, are eligible for a Windows Phone 8 update. Hopefully, the wait for getting Windows Phone 7.8 on existing devices will not be very long as these handsets will not receive Windows Phone 8 at all.
While comparing WP 8 to WP 7.8 is not the most logical thing, but still it is strange that Microsoft could not utilise the OS for its single-core handsets. This could be mainly because of the amount of RAM (256 MB) it offers. For those, who do not care about dual-core on their phones, NFC, the WP 7.8 update should suffice their needs. The company states that WP 7.8 will be fairly similar to WP 8 interface in terms of look, style and overall design, which should keep many WP 7 users happy for the time being, until they decide if they need to take the WP 8 plunge.

Developers Watch Out: Google Needs More Apps For Tablets

Well, each day we get to see either an Android based tablet or smartphone being launched in India, which fall in the highly affordable category. Recent reports suggest that Android activations have jumped 400 per cent in the country. According to a recent report by Bloomberg and Dow Jones, Google has registered more than 700,000 applications in its Google Play at the moment. From the India point of view, this is a great opportunity for home-grown application developers as app downloads have increased greatly in the country and also, India has become the fourth largest market in Android app downloads.

One of the key problems with Google Play is that most of the applications are simply a clone of popular ones, while several others are malware in disguise of games and wallpapers. Google still lacks applications optimised for tablets and is expecting that the popularity of Nexus 7 will drive developers to build apps exclusively for the tablets.
According to Google, “Over the past year, Android device activations in India have jumped more than 400 per cent, bringing millions of new users to Google Play and driving huge increases in app downloads. In the last six months, Android users in India downloaded more apps than in the previous three years combined, and India has rocketed to become the fourth-largest market worldwide for app downloads. To help developers capitalize on this tremendous growth, we are launching Google Play seller support in India.”
Now, developers in India can sell paid applications, in-app products, and subscriptions in Google Play, with monthly payouts to their local bank accounts. Expect A Drop In Engineering Campus Hiring In 2013

With Campus recruitment season round the corner, a survey with about 125 recruiters indicates there will be a considerable drop in student intake when compared to last year. According to a Firstnaukri.com campus recruitment survey, 56 per cent of recruiters said that the number of students that they will hire from campus placements will be lesser in 2013. Firstnaukri.com is a naukri.com portal and is exclusively targeted towards entry level hiring. This survey was conducted with recruiters across sectors to gauge an understanding on the campus hiring outlook for 2013-14 and the key challenges faced by them on-campus.

Most of the recruiters who hire only Management Graduates said that they will visit lesser campuses and will hire lower number of students in 2013. Recruiters who hire only engineers, however, had a split in view. About 50 per cent said that there will be a drop in campus hiring numbers and the other half said that they will maintain their hiring levels.
Software sector has the highest intake of students from campus, 53 per cent of them said that campus hiring will not be affected because of the ongoing slowdown, while 47 per cent said that they will lower their intake in 2013 when compared to last year.
“Amid the economic uncertainty and uncertain outlook, most companies are cautious about their campus hiring and do not want to go overboard. However, as the survey suggests companies will still continue to hire but may lower numbers when compared to earlier years,” said Deepali Singh, business head, Firstnaukri.com.

Could Google Name Its Next Android Version 'KajuKatli'?

A couple of Indian Android enthusiasts would be sending Page and Rubin a box of the Indian sweet along with a letter signed by supporters from India pitching for the same.
Page is the co-founder of Google and Rubin is the co-founder of Android, Inc. Google acquired Android, Inc., in 2005. Rubin is currently the senior vice-president of Mobile and Digital Content at Google, where he oversees the development of Android.

"We have been running this campaing for the past three weeks, asking for KajuKatli as the next Android version. Google sure has taken notice of this. At least one senior Google employee, who is an Indian retweeted about the campaign on the first day. We are hopeful that if enough Indians demand an Android version named after an Indian sweet, it shall work," said Annkur P Agarwal, who is running the 'Join The #KajuKatli For Android' campaign. So far, around 4,000 people have supported the campaign.
Other than spreading the word online, Agarwal and his colleagues have also been garnering support for the campaign with a giant mock-up of Kaju Katli on the streets of Mumbai.
"I think Google has a big focus on India. It showed Hindi support during the launch of its last Android version, which was named JellyBean. The next would be a sweet beginning with the alphabet 'K'. Hence, KajuKatli," added Agarwal. "The idea of Kaju Katli was not meant to be funny or humourous, but something that India could resonate with," says Agarwal.
Android, a free open source, is the single largest modern mobile operating system (OS) in India.

Samsung announced the release of a firmware update that is able to patch the vulnerability in the devices. You can even block this security vulnerability by installing the free app, NoTelURL. This app will warn you when an USSD command is encountered and will check with you if you want to execute or not. It is also advised that you back-up your device often.

First Release Candidate Of Samba 4 Out

The first release candidate (RC 1) for Samba 4 is now available. The developers have included a directory service that is compatible with Microsoft's Active Directory in the version 4 of the free Windows services server. Samba 4 is not stable for production use. However, it`s out for testing. The RC 1 comes after eight beta releases but there are not much changes.

Among the new features highlighted in the H report, “The file server component that is based Samba 3 now also negotiates the SMB3 dialect; however, the Samba developers have not implemented all of the optional features that can be used in negotiations. "Leases", an improved type of oplock, are not included, but RC1 does provide a first implementation of durable handles. Samba 4 acquired printing capabilities in the most recent beta.”
One of the latest things in the RC1 is it uses the internal DNS server by default, implemented by Kai Blin. Interested Samba users can familiarise themselves with Samba 4 by checking the 'how to' documentation.
Samba 4 RC 1 source code is available for download from the project's servers. The source code for Samba is licensed under the GPLv3.

India May Have The Fastest Supercomputer By 2017

We often hear developed countries creating revolutionary technologies but if reports are to be believed, India may house the fastest supercomputer by 2017. Reportedly, the Indian government is aiming to build a supercomputer that would be 61 times faster than the one that exists currently.

Telecom and IT minister, Kapil Sibal shared the charted roadmap with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The document talks about ways to build petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers. The entire project will cost the Indian government an estimated Rs 4,700 crore. We recently reported that India’s top supercomputer ranks 58th globally in terms of its computing speed.
And if this supercomputer actually becomes reality, then it will be faster than Sequoia by IBM, which is the fastest supercomputer in the world at present. It is said to have a computing speed of 16.32 petaflops. Which means it has the same computing power as combined with over 7.8 lakhs high-end laptops together.
Petaflop is used to measure the processing speed of a computer, which is expressed as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second. Exaflop is one quintillion computer operations per second. Simply put, one exaflop is thousand times faster than one petaflop, Tech 2 reports.
A government official told media, “In his (Sibal's) letter, he has said that C-DAC has developed a proposal with a roadmap to develop a petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers in the country with an outlay of Rs 4,700 crore."

DataWind To Discontinue UbiSlate 7+ Tablet

he company behind Aakash and UbiSlate, DataWind that previously surprised the consumer electronics market with its low-cost tablets has another revelation to make. However, this time the company is taking a step back. DataWind is reportedly planning to discontinue its low cost tablet, UbiSlate7+.

The company has cited the fluctuating rupee-dollar value as the chief reason. According to a company official, the firm is looking forward to end the UbiSlate 7+ tablet as it is bringing losses to the firm. The tablet priced at Rs 2,999 had set the Indian market on fire with its pricing.
Earlier this year in April, DataWind announced the launch of its low cost Android-tablet- UbiSlate7+ which infused severe hype among tablet enthusiasts. As an outcome, DataWind's website was flooded with pre-orders. However, this remains to be a clueless mystery as to why a majority of the pre-orders are still not met and the majority of the customers are left with nothing but anguish and frustration with them.
But all this does seem to dither the company's focus in the Indian tablet market as it has launched four new tablets last week. The new tablets are priced below Rs 5,000.
On the other hand, the large customer group that pre-ordered the UbiSlate 7+ and are anticipating their dream tablet for many months might have to think of some another choice now.
